About the Sheba guinea pig
The Sheba, also called the Sheba Mini Yak, is a medium-haired guinea pig with a tousled, rosetted coat that forms 'mutton chop' whiskers on the sides of the face. It was developed in Australia in the 1960s and is mainly recognised by Australian breed clubs.
The Sheba is rare outside Australia, and reliable breed-specific information is limited. Its coat is longer and messier than an Abyssinian's but not as long as a Peruvian's.
Temperament
Shebas are generally described as friendly and lively, but individual temperament varies. Like all guinea pigs, they are social animals that need companions. Calm, regular handling helps them settle.
Housing
Provide a spacious enclosure with clean, non-tangling bedding. Spot-clean daily to keep the coat free of urine and debris. Keep them at a stable, comfortable indoor temperature away from heat and draughts.
Diet
Feed unlimited hay, daily vitamin C-rich vegetables and a measured amount of guinea pig pellets. Fresh water should always be available. Avoid sudden diet changes.
Exercise & enrichment
Hides, tunnels and foraging opportunities keep Shebas busy. Floor time in a clean area provides exercise. Short grooming sessions can be a positive bonding routine.
Grooming
Brush the coat a few times a week to prevent tangles, especially around the rosettes and face. Trim nails regularly and check the rear end for soiling.
Health
Little is documented about breed-specific health problems. They share common guinea pig risks such as scurvy, dental issues, respiratory infections and skin problems. A longer coat increases the risk of matting and flystrike if hygiene slips.
