About the Kangal Shepherd Dog

The Kangal Shepherd Dog is a large livestock guardian from Turkey, named after the Kangal district of Sivas. It was developed to protect flocks from predators such as wolves. It is a powerful, muscular dog with a short, dense coat, usually fawn to pale dun with a black mask and ears. It is calm in manner but protective when needed.

Temperament

Calm, independent and protective, often watchful and reserved with strangers. It is loyal to its family. It needs experienced handling, early socialisation and firm, fair training.

Exercise

Needs daily exercise and space to roam in a secure area. It is not suited to small homes or urban living.

Grooming

Short dense double coat that sheds heavily in season. Brush weekly, and more often during moulting.

Care & wellbeing

Needs very secure, high fencing, as a guardian that patrols its territory. Feed a diet suited to large breeds and keep it lean to protect its joints. In hot weather give it shade and water.
