About the Kai

The Kai is a medium-sized spitz-type dog from Japan, from the mountainous Kai region, traditionally used for hunting boar and deer. It is sturdy, with pricked ears and a curled tail, and is best known for its brindle coat in shades of black, red or brindle. It is a rare breed, even in Japan, and has a reputation as a loyal, alert dog.

Temperament

Devoted to its family, alert and often reserved with strangers. Intelligent and can be strong-willed, so it needs early socialisation and patient, consistent training.

Exercise

Needs at least an hour of daily exercise, including walks and mental activities. It is happiest with an active routine.

Grooming

Short to medium double coat that sheds, especially seasonally. Brush weekly, more often when shedding.

Care & wellbeing

Keep weight in check and provide a secure garden, as it may follow prey. Dental care and routine checks are advisable.

Common questions

How big does a Kai get?

Adult Kais typically stand about 45–55 cm at the shoulder and weigh around 12–25 kg. Individuals vary, and males are often larger than females.

How long do Kais live?

Typically 12–15 years. Keeping them lean, active and up to date with vet checks gives the best chance of a long, healthy life.

How much exercise does a Kai need?

As a guide, around 90–120 minutes a day, split between walks, play and sniffing time. Puppies and older dogs need shorter, gentler sessions.

How much grooming does a Kai need?

Brushing a few times a week. Check ears, teeth and nails as part of the routine.

Are Kais easy to train?

Generally trainable with consistent, reward-based practice.

Do Kais shed?

A moderate amount. Regular brushing keeps loose hair under control.

Are Kais good with children?

Many get on well with children. Always supervise young children with any dog, and teach them to give the dog space.

Can a Kai live in a flat?

It's usually a challenge — as long as they get enough daily exercise and time outdoors.
