About the Estrela Mountain Dog

The Estrela Mountain Dog, or Cao da Serra da Estrela, is a large livestock guardian from the mountains of central Portugal, where it protected flocks from wolves. It is powerfully built, with either a long, harsh coat or a shorter one, usually fawn, wolf-grey or brindle. At home it is calm and watchful, and it tends to bond closely with its own family while staying aloof with strangers.

Temperament

Loyal, calm and protective of its family and territory, though wary of strangers. It is independent and can be stubborn, so early socialisation and patient training matter. It may bark at night.

Exercise

Moderate exercise, a long daily walk and a secure garden suit it. It should not be over-exercised when young.

Grooming

Long coats need brushing two or three times a week. Short coats need less. Heavy seasonal shedding.

Care & wellbeing

Keep weight lean to protect joints. Avoid heat exertion and give secure fencing.
