About the American English Coonhound
The American English Coonhound is a fast, athletic scent hound, often with a red-and-white ticked coat, though blue tick and tricolour also occur. It was bred for speed and endurance when hunting raccoon and fox. It has a strong, hunting voice and plenty of stamina.
Temperament
Friendly, sociable and easygoing at home, but very driven when it catches a scent. It tends to be good with other dogs, reflecting its history as a pack hunter.
Exercise
This is a high-energy hound that needs long daily outings and room to run in safe areas. It suits active, rural homes better than city flats.
Grooming
The short, hard coat needs a quick weekly brush. Pay attention to ear cleanliness.
Care & wellbeing
Recall can be unreliable when scent is around, so keep it on a lead or in secure spaces. It can be vocal, especially when bored. Lameness or ear problems should be checked by a vet.

History
The breed descends from English foxhounds brought to Virginia and other colonies in the 1600s and 1700s and adapted to hunting raccoon in rough American terrain. It was registered by the UKC in the early 1900s under the name English Fox and Coonhound, and several other coonhound breeds were later split from it. The AKC recognised it in 2011.
