About the Segugio Maremmano

The Segugio Maremmano comes from the Maremma, the rugged coastal country of Tuscany, where it has been used to follow the scent of wild boar and other game. It is a medium-sized, solid hound with a short, rough or harsh coat. The FCI recognises it provisionally, and it remains first and foremost a hunter's dog.

Temperament

As a working scent hound, likely to be tenacious, keen and sociable with family. May be independent and driven by scent. Best with experienced owners.

Exercise

Needs lots of daily exercise and chances to follow scent. Secure fencing is advisable.

Grooming

Its hard, short coat needs only an occasional brush to remove loose hair and mud.

Care & wellbeing

Clean the ears from time to time and keep it in lean, fit condition. Like other trail hounds it will follow a scent for miles, so give it secure boundaries and a lead in open country.
