About the Polish Hunting Dog
The Polish Hunting Dog, or Gończy Polski, is a medium-sized scent hound from Poland, used to track and drive game through woodland and hills. It is a lean but strong dog with a black and tan coat, long ears and a good voice. It is bred to work alongside a hunter and is mostly seen in hunting hands.
Temperament
Energetic and friendly, it is used to working with a pack. It can be independent and vocal when on a scent. Early socialisation helps.
Exercise
Needs a lot of daily exercise with secure space to follow scent. Use a lead near roads.
Grooming
The short coat takes a weekly brush to remove loose hair. After hunting trips, clean the ears and look over the feet.
Care & wellbeing
A hardy hunter, it needs space to run and a task to occupy its mind. Keep it lean, and expect it to be unhappy in a quiet flat with little activity.
Living with a Polish Hunting Dog
Typical tendencies for the breed. Upbringing, training and the individual matter as much.
History
A Polish scent hound used to hunt game in forested country. It is a working hunter's dog developed from regional hounds, uncommon outside Poland.
