About the Poitevin
The Poitevin is a large French scent hound from the Poitou region, once used in packs to hunt wolves and later deer and hare. It is a tall, strong, long-legged dog with a short coat, traditionally tricolour, and drop ears. It is uncommon today and hardly seen as a family pet.
Temperament
Energetic, sociable and tenacious, it is used to pack life. It may be vocal and independent when following a scent and is generally friendly with people.
Exercise
Needs a lot of daily exercise, ideally with secure space to follow scent. Keep on a lead near roads.
Grooming
The short, close coat needs only an occasional brush. Look over its ears and feet after a day in rough country.
Care & wellbeing
A pack hound built for long hunts, the Poitevin needs a lot of space and a lot of work. Keep it lean, and expect it to be a poor fit for a small home or a quiet routine.
Living with a Poitevin
Typical tendencies for the breed. Upbringing, training and the individual matter as much.
History
A French scent hound from the Poitou region, bred in packs for hunting wolves and other large game. It is a rare regional breed, kept almost entirely for pack hunting.
Health

Common questions
How big does a Poitevin get?
Adult Poitevins typically stand about 62–72 cm at the shoulder. Individuals vary, and males are often larger than females.
How much exercise does a Poitevin need?
As a guide, around 90–120 minutes a day, split between walks, play and sniffing time. Puppies and older dogs need shorter, gentler sessions.
How much grooming does a Poitevin need?
An occasional brush is plenty. Check ears, teeth and nails as part of the routine.
Are Poitevins easy to train?
Often independent-minded, so training needs patience, consistency and high-value rewards.
Do Poitevins shed?
A moderate amount. Regular brushing keeps loose hair under control.
Are Poitevins good with children?
Many get on well with children. Always supervise young children with any dog, and teach them to give the dog space.
Can a Poitevin live in a flat?
It's usually a challenge — as long as they get enough daily exercise and time outdoors.
