About the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje
The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje is a small spaniel-type dog from the Netherlands, historically used in duck decoys, where its white plumed tail helped lure ducks into traps. It has a medium-length, slightly wavy coat, usually white with red-orange patches and black-tipped ears. It is a lively, graceful dog and is now kept as an active family companion.
Temperament
Alert, friendly and agile, it tends to be affectionate with family and reserved with strangers. It is sensitive and responds best to gentle, reward-based training.
Exercise
Needs about an hour of exercise daily plus play, such as fetch and agility. It enjoys outdoor activity.
Grooming
The feathered coat needs brushing two or three times a week. Check the ears.
Care & wellbeing
The Kooikerhondje was bred to lure ducks into traps, so it is quiet, watchful and sensitive. Reward-based training suits it better than harsh handling. Look over its feathered ears and feet after walks through wet vegetation.
