About the English Cocker Spaniel
The English Cocker Spaniel is a British gundog developed to flush woodcock from thick cover and bring it back to hand. It is compact and sturdy, with long feathered ears, a silky coat in many colours, and a constantly wagging tail. It remains a strong working gundog and a much-loved family pet, with an eager, merry nature.
Temperament
Cheerful, affectionate and eager to please, usually good with children and other pets. It is lively and can be sensitive, so gentle, reward-based training works best. It dislikes being left alone for long periods.
Exercise
Needs an hour or more a day, including off-lead running, scent games and retrieving. Working lines may need more.
Grooming
Silky coat that tangles easily. Brush several times a week and trim regularly. Clean the ears and feet regularly.
Care & wellbeing
Long ears that sweep through food bowls and puddles need regular washing and drying. Cockers love their food and gain weight easily, so keep portions measured.
