About the Medium-Sized Anglo-French Hound

The Medium-Sized Anglo-French Hound comes from France, where English foxhound-type blood was blended with local French hounds to produce a pack dog for hare and other small game. It is a medium-sized, athletic hound with a short, dense coat, usually tricolour or bicolour, a long muzzle and folded ears. It is bred for stamina and a good voice, and is best known in hunting kennels.

Temperament

Generally sociable, tenacious and driven by scent, it is typically friendly with people and other dogs from pack life. It can be independent and distractible outdoors, and may be vocal. It needs an owner who understands hounds.

Exercise

A very active hound needing long daily exercise, ideally with space to follow scent safely. Secure fencing and a lead near roads are important as it may follow a trail for miles.

Grooming

The smooth, dense coat is easily kept in order with an occasional rub down. After days in thick cover, wipe the folded ears and look over the legs and feet.

Care & wellbeing

Check ears after muddy outings and dry them. Keep weight in check and check for ticks and cuts after hunting or country walks. Not usually suited to a sedentary home.

History

A French scent hound developed by crossing English and French hunting hounds to create a medium-sized pack dog for hunting hare and similar quarry. It was bred for stamina, nose and voice, and is kept mainly by hunters rather than as a house pet.
