About the Gascon Saintongeois

The Gascon Saintongeois is a French scent hound created in the south-west of the country by combining local hound types, and used to hunt in packs. It is a large, elegant hound with a short coat, typically white with black patches or a blue-mottled look, and long drooping ears. It is a tracking specialist, valued by hunters for a good nose and a melodious voice.

Temperament

Often gentle and sociable, but strongly driven by scent and independent in the field. Vocal and best with companions. Can be sensitive, so training should be calm and consistent.

Exercise

Needs lots of exercise: long daily walks and the chance to run in secure areas. Keep on a long line when unfenced.

Grooming

Short coat needing only a weekly brush. Clean and check the ears regularly.

Care & wellbeing

Long, drop ears need regular checks. Large, deep-chested dogs should be fed sensibly and not exercised hard right after meals.
