About the Black and Tan Coonhound
The Black and Tan Coonhound is a large scent hound from the United States, developed to track raccoon and other game, often at night, and to tree it. It has a strong, athletic build, long drop ears, a short, glossy black and tan coat, and a deep, melodic voice. It is known for its mournful face, deep voice and good-natured manner at home.
Temperament
Friendly, easy-going and sociable, usually good with people and other dogs. Independent and scent-driven, with a loud bay. Can be stubborn.
Exercise
A trailing hound from the American South, it likes long, scent-rich walks and a chance to use its nose each day. It is best let off only in fully enclosed ground, since night-hunting instinct can take it far.
Grooming
The glossy coat comes up well with a hound mitt once a week. Wash the long ears and the folds of the lips gently, as they pick up food and dirt.
Care & wellbeing
A big, deep-chested hound, it does best with two smaller meals a day and no hard running just after eating. Its ears hang low and warm, so dry them after swimming or baths.
